Practice in India with a Foreign Medical Degree: Medical Council of India Exam

The Medical Council of India (MCI) Foreign Medical Graduate Examination is widely referred to as the FMGE. This medical licensing examination is meant for individuals who study MBBS abroad and desire to do their medical practice in India.

FMGE is conducted by the National Board of Examination (NBE) and came into being through Screening Test Regulations, 2002. This examination is mandatory for all Indian citizens, or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders, who have pursued their medical education abroad and plan to practice in India by obtaining a provisional or permanent registration with MCI or any State Medical Council.

The Appeal of Pursuing MBBS Abroad

Medicine is an extremely competitive field in India. Due to high cut-offs and low chances of getting a seat at a medical college, many Indian students choose to pursue MBBS abroad. There are many medical colleges and universities abroad where Indian students can enjoy state-of-the-art facilities and a wholesome educational experience.

Most of these institutes are also equipped with highly experienced and qualified faculty. Top medical colleges abroad can provide students with the chance to learn and use some of the most cutting-edge technologies in the medical field and get internationally recognized degrees.

Practicing in India

Many students who complete their MBBS abroad want to return home and practice in India, so as to contribute to the well-being of its citizens. To start their professional life in India, these individuals have to undertake the MCI Foreign Medical Graduate Examination. Once they clear this examination, the individuals will be equivalent to those who have done their MBBS in India and can start their medical career in the country.

MCI Screening Test

MCI Foreign Medical Graduate Examination is carried out to check the basic concepts, application of concepts, common sense as well as the ability to check time management. It is meant to make sure that students completing MBBS abroad are familiar with the core data. After clearing FMGE, one has to do a one-year internship in India.

MCI Screening Test is considered to be quite a challenging exam. Hence, to increase the odds of faring well in it, one can get enrolled at a good FMGE coaching centre in Chennai, Bangalore, Pune, or some other major city.
